ignition switch change? does this do anything? 200 1990

i have a quick question. my 90 volvo sometime cranks a lot before it turns over. i think crank is the right word...basically, what happens before it turns over? anyway, i took it to a mechanic and he said the ignition switch might need to be changed...would this help the problem? if so how? and, what does the ignition switch do anyway?
