3000 RPM @ 70 mph??!! 900 1995

Just came back from my first long trip in my new 95 940 turbo wagon. I was very dissapointed to find that the engine runs at 3000-3200 at cruising speed - which for me is 75 MPH. I pushed the car to 80 and the rpms were around 3500 - this made for an exhausting trip due to the increased engine whine and vibration at these RPMs. Is this normal for this engine? Thanks in advance for comments!
