check engine light on an 87 700 1987

What will cause the check engine condition on an 87 740 GLE? I'm pretty sure there are no codes to retrieve in this model. What I'm after is - will I get an indication if via warning light if the ECU is collecting information that is outside of normal operating conditions. Like a non-functioning O2 sensor or knock sensor or AMM.
