AW70 Transmission Delay Between Gears 200

I am considering buying an 89 240 (220K), but the current owner says there is a problem with the transmission. It shifts into neutral and reverse without a problem, but there is an apparent delay when changing gears during normal driving conditions. Could this simply be a matter of adjusting the kickdown cable or is the tranny toast? What are the possibilities?

I can't thank you all enough for the advice that you have given me since i've become a Volvo addict.=)
