Fuel gauge sluggish - is this normal? 900 1993

Hello. My wife's 940 wagon has a very sluggish fuel gauge. After a fill-up it takes a good 5-7 minutes for the gauge to reach 'Full'. I know that fuel gauges should have some histeresis built into them so as not to change the indication during turns and stops, etc. But this is a bit too much delay. I've owned many cars in the past and have never seen this slow a gauge. Is this the way 940 fuel gauges are or do I have some sort of gummed up float/sending unit there?

Also, the low fuel lamp goes on pretty early. As soon as it goes on I try to get the car filled up and usually end up putting about 12 gallons before the pump kicks off. I understand the car has a 19 gallon tank. What gives? Might this be related to the sluggishness (assuming the sluggishness is abnormal)? Is this just a "too early" indicator? I don't have a problem with it, just trying to get used to it. My S70 will light the low fuel light and I really do put in 15 to 16 gallons in (18 gallon tank). I mean 7 gallons reserve is almost a third of the full tank, a bit too early to turn on the "panic" light (my wife treats it as such, which I don't want to discourage), no?

Please share your experiences with the fuel gauge behavior on your 940's (or others as I believe 240's and 740's are very similar in most aspects).

Many thanks in advance.

P.S. I love this car!
