Could someone clarify the OD relay diagnosis for me? 700 1991

My girlfriend *just* got a Volvo 740, and it's got "the overdrive problem" ... I want to see if there are tests I can do to isolate the overdrive problem to either the switch *or* the relay.

When the light on the dash follows exactly whether the overdrive is on or off, and pressing the switch button only SOMETIMES toggles the overdrive on and off ... and the overdrive (and simultanously, the dashboard light) COMES on and off on its own from time to time ...

Does it point to a wiring / switch problem or a relay problem? Or doesn't that really tell us anything and I should just bite the bullet, tear the relay out and get crackin' with the soldering iron and see if things get better?
