loose steering column 200 1986

when i pull the steering wheel towards my chest, i can feel a very slight in and out movement in the steering. I went under the car for investigation, and discovered that the connection between the column and the steering rack(cam gear) is somewhat loose, i could move the shaft up and down a bit in the rack. Will this mean that i need a new rack? Or could it be something less expensive.
