My 85 740 just developed a bad noise. Sounds like rear end. If you back off the gas, there is a bad, heavy whining / moaning. Coast in neutral and it is gone. Also when pulling it is quiet. Before I turned the radio down I had allowed it to moan for some time and there was a definite burning smell. I coached it home in the above fashion w/o any more burning smell. Can anyone tell me what to expect on examination ? Could it be the driveshaft bearing, pinion bearing, etc ? The noise started suddenly. Thanks for any help.
