The Economics of Noisy Valves 200 1987

I just bought an '87 245 with 251,320K miles and Zero (car's from New Mexico)rust. That's a real find to us New Enganders. The valves are noisy. I'd like to do the job myself but hesitate at spending a bunch of money on a tool l'll hardley ever use. Furthermore, if I do the work, I'm thinking I'll want a full assortment of shims on hand in case I need them. But this means spending more cash on shims I probably won't use for a long time, maybe ever. What do all you other DIYers do?

I checked the 700/900 FAQ (can't say enough good things about that excellent resourse) and found mention of an IPD rental kit. I went to their site but couldn't find the kit. Do you have to call them? Anyone ever use it?

It's Jim (in Hartford CT)
