swap gen. for alt. 120-130

Found out today that my generator can't be rebuilt. The car is my sons and he has a big stereo amp in it. I'm thinking about swapping the generator for an alternator. Has anybody done this? If so what alternator was used? I've been told to use an early (70's) gm brand. Any ideas? Thanks once more guys! Karl
