New thermostat. What's this? See picture... 700 1989

I've got coolant leaking from most of my radiator hoses which were replaced last year. Posted here and got some good suggestions to replace the expansion tank cap and the thermostat.

I got the parts today and when I removed the old thermostat I saw a big crack where it sits in the engine. See picture.

Can anyone tell me if this is a normal crack? And what problems will it give me?
