More Diesel related questios 700

Hi all:

In my ongoing quest to properly maintain my beautiful running D24T Diesel. I have some more questions

(1)- I'm still trying to determine what oil I should use. I am leaning towards maintaining the prior owners use of Shell Rotella T 15W40 at 3000 mile intervals. Solely because the beast runs so good at 184,000 miles. The FAQ's say to refer to the Owners Maunual for the proper oils to use. I do not own an Owners Manual, so that's out. Furthermore, I'm not sure I would want to consult a publication that advocates oil changes at 7500 mile intervals for a diesel (YIKES!!). I'm concerned that Rotella T 15W40 is too heavy for winter months. I've basically ruled out synthetics because of recommendations and past experiences from Badge 998.

So what should I use here guys?

(2)- I have a very un-rhythmic ticking noise at low rpm. Slightly louder than the normal Diesel Clatter. In fact, maybe it is part of the Diesel Noise. Nothing like a Piston Slap (I've heard that). Sounds more like valve noise. I've seen reference to a noise like this coming from the Vacuuum Pump in the FAQ's. Is this normal, if not what can I do about it? I haven't checked the valve adjustment yet.
