240 tailgate support problem 200

The ball socket attaching one of the tailgate support struts to the body has come half undone. It's going to damage the bodywork or shear off if I can't tighten it, but there's no access to the nut inside the bodywork that I can find. Has anyone else had - and solved - this problem?
