Shifter broke! M47 200 1987

Hmm bad thing du jour...
87 240 M47, 225K.
The shifter made a pop noise, and now it feels like the pivot point of the shifter is broken. It moves up and down, and I can't reach 2nd or 4th gears at all.
I have reverse and 3rd, basically. It feels like there's too much play in it for the available travel of the shifter to get over to 1st or 5th (1st really just seems hard to find, I did catch it one time since it broke on the drive home). The fore-aft movement of it feels very loose too.
Previously I fixed the teflon cups and rubber donuts in the shifter ball, and that tightened up the shift lever considerably but I've always had side-to-side play. Now I've got a LOT.
It's raining like hell here, so I can't get under and see what's wrong yet. Or at least I don't want to, sinec its like a hurricane outside.

Any similar experiences or help would be appreciated. I don't wanna put a new trans in it! (Though it could REALLY use a clutch now after a few 3rd gear starts.)
