Wacky Speedometer Needle at Idle Speed 200 1987

Hi: Have a 1987 245 Wagon. 222,000 Miles, B230F engine. Auto Trans.

At idle speed while sitting stopped the speedometer needle will all of a sudden jump quickly from 0 to maybe 10mph and then back again.

It will do this a few times then stop. Then it will do it again.

This typically for me in the past (with my other 240 Volvo's) has indicated an electrical problem, like a bad battery or bad alternator.

However the battery is 3 months old. The Altternator is brand new. I put the alternator in myself and all the grounds are good.

The only other thing done to the car recently is that I replaced the cover on the rear differential with a used one. I did not adjust the speed sensor on the cover because the speedometer seemed to work fine (the differrental cover rusted thru and was leaking oil)

The jumping needle did not appear to be a problem after I replaced the Diff. cover. It started about a week later.

QUESTION?

Dooes anyone have any suggestions on what is going on with the jumping/erratic speedometer needle?

Thanks
