Surge Tank Question? No alteration to gas tank. 120-130

When I was searching for information on surge tanks for a fuel injection conversion, I found an article about using the existing fuel pump (mechanical fuel pump for the carb setup) to keep the surge tank (which was mounted in the engine compartment) filled. The high pressure fuel pump would pull and circulate fuel from the surge tank to feed the FI system.

Does this setup seem like it would work? Is there another way to install fuel injection without altering the gas tank?

I like the idea of mounting a surge tank in the engine compartment because:

-No alteration to fuel tank.

-Less chance of vapor locking occurring (High pressure fuel pump doesn't need to pull gas all the way from the gas tank).

-No cornering issues(A surge tank is good for keeping the gas available for the fuel pump).

-Most components easily assessible in the engine compartment.

Any suggestions?

Paul
