Burning smell after stuck in snow 900 1994

I have a 1994 944 and got it stuck in some snow for about an hour during the recent nor'easter. I had to get somewhere, was stupid and didn't put the snows on. In order to get it out of the snow, there was quite a lot of wheel spinning, and now after driving, there's a faint burning smell that goes away after a few seconds. I was hoping that it was burning rubber, but it persisted for a week after the snow had melted. Is this the odor of a burning, damaged transmission? How can I find out?
