just died 700

I have a situation,
I have a 1989 740gl, it has been running rough for quit a while, mostly on cold start. In the past if I pump the pedal it will start and run ok, though still a little rough. Today it was starting and idleing strange, quiet, like it wanted to die. But still seemed ok. This evening I was driving along and it just died.When I turn the key it seems that all I hear is starter, it does not fire, or even try.
any clues?
