in tank fuel pump replaced by out of tank pump 200

I have been told that should the in tank pump fail, the main pump will strain itself and will suffer from premature failure. If one does not trust the in tank pump or does not want to dig up the fuel gauge and in tank pump, is it possible to insert an inline pump in the low pressure hose that goes from the tank to the main pump so as to assist the main pump in doing the job?

Are there any safety concerns that should be addressed to prevent the pump from getting disconnected an spraying fuel under the car. A cage like the one in which the main pump is lodged could be necessary?Any ideas anyone?
