Is it hard to disconnect the auto shift lockout solenoid? 200

Dear Brickers:

On my 1992/AW70, the shift lockout gets balky in cold weather. And now it's winter again. Sooner or later it's going to freeze up completely and I won't be able to get the trans out of park. The shop owner says it's $$$ to replace.

I know about the release lever. I keep reaching into the shifter slot and pushing it back and forth until the thing lets go. I haven't been able to figure out which way I'm *supposed* to push the lever--it doesn't seem to have any effect either way until eventually it does--but that may be the solenoid letting go on its own once it warms up. Also the lever feels like flimsy plastic--I bet one could break it off without too much effort.

Is it feasible to bypass or remove the whole stupid mechanism?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey
