No Start Diagnosis Quandry 900 1992

Any suggestions are appreciated........ it's a 92 940 with 190K -Regina.

After driving home from work one day and no symptoms, the next day car won't start. Car cranks but won't fire. Checked one plug and was getting spark, so I figured it was fuel delivery or else it would at least fire on that cylinder.

Ran the diagnostics and got 1-1-1, no error, but couldn't hear fuel pump. I never heard it before, but was never listening for it either. Dead silence when the fuel pump should be activated.

Removed the primary and auxiliary relays and examined. No obvious solder problems. Replaced relays and ran diagnostic in Control Function 3. I could see and hear the relays clicking (openning and closing the contacts) and I could hear the injectors (I think) working (rapid clicking or popping sound), but I still could not hear the fuel pump running.

Next I removed the primary relay again and jumpered terminals 30 and 87/2. I still could not hear the fuel pump running either from the driver's seat, from the fuel filler tube (gas cap off), or from inside the trunk. So, I concluded that the fuel pump was malfunctioning.

That is when things got confusing. For some reason, I decided run the diagnostics again. This time, instead of 1-1-1, I got 2-2-3 (Signal missing to/from idle valve) and 1-3-2 (Battary Voltage too low/high). The 1-3-2 didn't suprise me. It was still cranking but the temperature was in the thirties and I have cranked the car a lot in the last couple of weeks without it starting (and therefore recharging the battary).

I jumped the battary and, of course, the car still wouldn't start.

Would you agree with my original diagnosis - bad fuel pump? Was that a valid conclusion? If so, what about the idle valve fault code showing up later? What do you think that's all about?

I am using a Chilton's manual, which I have had frustrations with before, but it's pretty detailed and clear on the fuel system. There is a lot of talk about the RPM sensor (aka crank position sensor) in the FAQs but I find no reference to it in Chilton's nor could I locate anything sounding like it in the engine compartment. Does the Regina have this? If so, how can I locate/identify it?
