oil pressure sender... 200 1984

1984 turbo, so if i have the two wires reversed what will happen, will i get no reading?, right now i just have the needle pegged in the middle of the gauge whenever i turn the car on, this is not right. do i need a new sender or are my wires leading into the unit needing to be switched around?
