Poor engine idle / performance after replacing rear engine seal. 700 1989

So I finish replacing the rear engine seal and while I was in there I replaced the front tranny seal, tranny filter etc. Get it all together and fire everything up..... and I got a surprise. Transmission shifts perfectly but the engine sounds like the timing is off. It's RPM's rev up and down and will die on idle. My test drive was cut short because it ran so poorly. I have no idea how this came to be as I didn't touch anything other the the transmission components. Can anybody help?
