240 advanced timing very high, now will not start 200 1987

Okay, so I was able to barely start my car and get home from work. I limped it home and found the timing to be very advanced, so much so that it pinged at slight throttle and almost died waiting at stoplights. I tried adjusting the timing and could only get it to around 17 degrees. I removed the distributor and reset the timing again, straight up at 12 degrees. I let it run for quite a while in my driveway and it sounded fine.

I got up this morning, and it would crank fine but would not start. Its almost like I'm back to the same situation where the timining is too far advanced to even start. I didn't fool with it very much since it was Christmas and all.

I do have some ideas. I'm wondering if its either the timing belt has slipped, or the ignition box (on the passenger side) is bad. I have a slight hunch that its the belt, even though it was replaced around 30k ago. Will the ignition box cause a no start condition, or advance the timing? I'm confident I can change the belt okay, but it'd be nice if all I had to do was replace the ignition box. Thanks for any advice.
