In response to the question of what the tollerable output shaft clearances are in an AW70, I found the following information. This info is from my copy of the Volvo TP30868/2 service manual covering the BW55, AW55, AW70, and AW71. (dated August, 1989)
AW70, AW71 Automatic Transmission Clearances (200/700 vehicles):
Output shaft axial clearance: 0.3mm-0.9mm (0.0118"-0.0354")
Input shaft, clutch CO, axial clearance: 0.3mm-0.9mm (0.0118"-0.0354")
(200 manual only) Oil pump: pump body - outer gear wheel: 2.1mm (0.083")
(700 manual only) Oil pump: pump body - outer gear wheel: 0.07mm-0.15mm (0.003"-0.006")
Oil pump: arc segment - large gear wheel: 0.11mm-0.14mm (0.0043"-0.0055")
Oil pump: axial clearance: 0.02mm-0.05mm (0.0008"-0.0019")
Brake BO: Clearance between clutch pressure plate and lock ring: 0.35mm-1.60mm
Clutch C2, brakes B1 and B2: clrnce betwn clutch assmbly press plate and lockring: 0.3mm-1.2mm
Brake and Clutch rings minimum permissable thickness: 2.1mm (0.083")
Solenoid Valve resistance: 13 ohms
In response to a few questions posted as to what the proper stall speeds are for their 240s with Automatic Transmissions, here are the numbers.
AW70/71 Torque Converter stall speeds. Listed by Engine Type, Stall Speed, Volvo Transmission Part Number (as listed on the tranny ID tag), and finally the Tranny ID tag plate color.
AW70:
B21F-MPG, 1800 rpm, 1208220, Yellow.
B21F-LH, 1980 rpm, 1208284, Silver.
B23F, 2220 rpm, 1208320, Purple.
B230F, 2000 rpm, 1209485, Purple.
AW71:
B21FT, 2050-2500 rpm, 1208222, Pink.
B21FT, 2050-2500 rpm, 1208319, Dark Brown.
Note: For the transmissions with two stall speeds listed, these are the 'initial' and 'final' numbers as the turbocharger begins and finishes spooling up.
BW55/AW55 Torque Converter stall speeds. Listed by Engine Type, Stall Speed, Volvo transmission Type Designation, and tranny ID plate color.
BW55:
B21A, 2200 rpm, 0455...003, Light Yellow.
B21A, 2200 rpm, 0455...014, Brown/Yellow.
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0455...005, Green.
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0455...006, Grey.
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0455...012, Grey.
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0455...019, Yellow/Brown.
B21F, 2100 rpm, 0455...027, Green.
B23E, 2400 rpm, 0455...030, Smoke Grey.
D24, 2200 rpm, 0455...020, Smoke Grey.
B27F, 2300 rpm, 0455...007, Light Blue.
B27F, 2200 rpm, 0455...011, Light Orange.
B27F, 2200 rpm, 0455...018, Pink.
B27F, 2200 rpm, 0455...021, Brown.
B28F, 2400 rpm, 0455...023, Light Yellow.
AW55:
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0355...100, Black.
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0355...250, Black.
B21F, 2500 rpm, 0355...320, Black.
B21F, 2100 rpm, 0355...376, Black (Red for 1982 and up.)
Note: All stall speeds of automatic transmission torque converters listed above will drop by 120 rpm for every 1,000 meters above sea level.
Note: The tranny ID plate is a rectangular 1"x2" plate on the transmission, facing sideways to the left just above the tranny pan. If you crawl under your car from below the driver's door (Left-Hand-Drive cars), you should be able to find it without too much trouble. It's on the forward 1/3 of the transmission housing, but behind the bell housing.
For the sake of completeness, I'll include the numbers from the 700 series Power Train book (TP 30687/1, July 1989) just in case someone has to pull a 740/760 automatic transmission for their 240 vehicle. The solo BW55 has a "type designation," and all the AW70/71 units have the Volvo part numbers marked on their plates.
BW55:
B28A, BW55, 2300 rpm, Type 029, Light Brown.
AW70/71:
B19E, AW70, 2200 rpm, 1208314, Silver.
B23E, AW71, 2100 rpm, 1208300, Orange.
B23FT, AW71, 2000-2500 rpm, 1208334, Pink.
B28A, AW71, 2100 rpm, 1208360, Yellow.
B28E, AW71, 2100 rpm, 1208310, Black.
B28F, AW71, 2000 rpm, 1208248, Blue.
B200K, AW70, 2300 rpm, 1208332, Red.
B200E, AW70, 2100 rpm, 1208415, Green.
B230A, AW71, 2100 rpm, 1208304, Black.
B230K, AW71, 2500 rpm, 1208371, Rose-colored.
B230FT, AW71, 2000-2700, 1208334, Pink.
The numbers listed for both the 240 and 740 should not be considered complete since these books were printed mid way through the vehicle production runs. Obviously, they don't cover the transmissions equipped with Lockup Torque Converters and the hardware to engage them. (I just pulled a AW-70L from an '89 740 Sedan with a part number of 1208604 and it will be replacing the original non-lockup AW-70 in my '87 240 Wagon.)
God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
