1985 240 overdrive slipping 200

2 days ago while on the freeway at 70 mph the car starting surging, at first I thought that it was missing but then I watched the tach and it was jumping about 400 RPM which was the same difference I got when I dis-engaged the OD and drove the rest of the way in 4th to Christmas dinner.
On the way home I was able to get back into OD for a while at 70 and then it started surging again when we were going up a long incline, after that I was able occasionally hold 60 in OD but it still occasionally was surging so my wife suggested that I leave OD off unitil we got within walking distance of home.
This is the first time that this has ever happened and it was totally out of the blue.
The car has 230,00 miles but I rebuilt the OD with the IPD kit about 20,000 miles ago.
I was always going to put together a pressure tester but never got around to it so if there are any easy diagnostic tips that anyone wants to share they would be greatly appreciatted.

Thanks,
Mark
