Hi guys. I got this '83 245 and it was not running with supposedly the only problem being it needed a new head gasket. I replaced the head gasket, the intake manifold gasket, the exhaust manifold gasket, the throttle body gasket, thermostat, hoses, belts, plugs, cap and rotor, oil and filter, air filter, flame trap changed and oil trap cleaned. I cleaned the throttle body and flap, and took off and cleaned out the idle control valve, put a new starter on, set the timing, and checked all the hoses for tight connections. I put Techron in the empty tank and added gas on top.
It started and runs but has no power. It blows dark smoke when revved and barely moves when I put it in reverse. I hope the black smoke is due to the injection cleaner I put in there, but I do not know. I finally got it moving by setting up the idle speed a good bit higher. The "click" I am supposed to hear on the throttle makes it idle too slow and it will cut out when I put it in gear. I had to set it higher to avoid it cutting out. The exhaust feels real strong and powerful. I am very confused. I am missing something basic. There is no power. Help!!!
