What has happened to Bilstein shocks? 200

Around 1985-86 I owned a 1982 264GLE. I installed the Bilstein shocks front and rear and the car handled beautifully. I now own a 1990 240 DL and decided to install the Bilsteins along with the IPD sway bars. Note in 2000 I installed Bilsteins in the rear and had to remove them do to a clunk near the top mounting bolt.A clearance issue. I figure I give them another chance.Problem 1- the front strut inserts now come with an "updated" label.Guess what, if you don't remove it the insert wont fit,Bilstein says they forgot to send the updated memo with the shocks.Problem 2- the strut inserts have so much yellow paint on them it also makes it difficult to install.20 minutes of grinding off yellow paint! Problem 3- you guessed it, the rear shocks still clunk at the mounting bolt.Bilstein says these shocks were not made for a "regular" 240 only to be used on the 240 turbo.Don't all 240 Volvos used the same diameter shock bolt? So my question is has anyone had the same thing happen to them and what did you do/use to shim a shock bolt? You would think at the prices they charge the shocks would be made to more exact tolerances. One other note on my 1982 I did not have any of these problems.
Hope everyone had a good holiday!
Nelson
