Need real-time AW-71 transmission help...please

Among our 240s is a '92 244 with an AW-71 automatic transmission that has been having delayed upshifts into overdrive. In the process of changing the transmission fluid filter, I pulled the transmission pan without too much difficulty. After doing so, I noticed two 1/4" steel tubes running down from the underside of the transmission, across the filter from one side to the other, and back up into the body of the transmission. As I was wiping excess fluid from the filter with a paper towel, one end of one of the tubes just popped out. I also noticed that this tube had a major crimp in it midway along its horizontal run. The x-sectional area is probably reduced by a factor of 10!

My questions are straightforward. Are these tubes held in place by just an interference fit? Is one of the tubes supposed to have a crimp? If the crimp is not supposed to be there, could the crimp be the source of my shifting problems?

Thanks.
