Tachometers from 164e 1980

I found a 164e today with an intact tachometer. It looked exactly like the 240 tachometer, except it had 6 cyl written on the back. It fit on the pre-1982 dashboard perfectly and seems to work ok. Did Volvo make different tachs for 6 vs 4 cylinder engines? Does the tachometer care if a car has 6 or 4 cylinders?
