How Do I know If the Voltage Regulator or entire Alternator is Bad? 200 1981

I get flickering lights sometimes on my brick.
Also, I wanted to switch out my '81's voltage regulator (55 Amp Alternator) with a junkyard (1988 100 Amp alternator), but don't know if that's ok. Are voltage regulators universal for the 240 series, or will I blow my alternator by switching voltage regulators?
