Steering Wheel & Starting Problems 200 1992

I have a 1992 240 GL. Lately I have been having a strange problem when I turn the ignition switch the car won't start. I hear the solenoid click, but the starter doesn't engage. If I turn the steering wheel all the way to the right (how much I need to turn it varies), the car will crank up just fine. I would appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions on how the steering wheel ties in with the starter.
