Automatic transimission does not go into over drive 200 1991

HI! My 1991 245 SE seems to have problem going to the overdrive. The engine is loader than usual at about 40 mph. The overdrive indicator does not go on. I know that the is a problem because the car would go into overdrive sometimes and the engine sounds normal. Any tips on what may be the problem would be appreciated.
