Repairing connections on rear defrost switch 200 1983

The rear defrost switch for our 1983 GL was stuck in the on position. Whether as a cause or effect, when we removed the switch, part of it was basically fried. The wires for the switch itself lead from their source to what looks like a type of plug. However, the plastic housing is melted; one of the plug-like blades on the old switch unplugged; the other just ripped out of the switch. It is hard to explain. I contemplated cutting the wires then soldering them to the "blades" on the replacement switch, but I'm not sure the wires would be long enough. Any suggestions on how to repair the necessary fitting, or to extend and solder the wire?
