Ignition Lock Maybe ? Please Help 200 1983

Heres something really strange that has just started happening today.


Interior lights and headlights work initially. When the Ignition Lock is turned all the way to start the car it will try and crank the engine and die. After there is no power to the car. To restore power to the car I will have to wait about 20secs and open and close a door. Everything seems to have power after that, but still wont start.

The ignition lock also is incredibly stiff to release the steering wheel lock.

So my thought is this. Could this be some wierd ignition lock problem, ie a short or something ? Could this be related to the extreamly cold weather here ? (-31C w/ Windchill) I'm going to try and short the starter to bypass and see if its the starter.

aghhhh . Please help me as I have to take busses in this weather.
