Canadian Catalytic converter cost?

Hello everyone,
Over the christmas holiday my 1989 240dl developed an exhaust leak. My local mechanic informed me the catalytic converter was the cause of the leak. I've heard varying stories that this is an expense part of the exhaust/emission sysytem Can anyone out there give me an idea of cost preferably in Canadian dollars.
