Need Help diagnosing brakes on 91 940SE wagon 900 1991

Driving today in the unusually winterlike Pacific Northwest and I noticed the ABS for the first time since i started driving this car (about one year).
Unfortunately, what I noticed was a horrible "gronk" noise and the brake pedal kicked back at me. This happened 3 more times when I applied extra force to the pedal when stopping on a slick patch.
I don't have much experience with ABS, but that just doesn't seem right at all.
One thing I do know is that the control arm bushings are due for replacement. In fact, I have them and have been putting off the install for about 3 months. Is it possible that the worn bushings could be causing this, rather than the ABS system?

thanks,
Ben Vahl
