Timing check on the '94 945ti 900

Before I hook up the timing light and dwell meter, I'm wondering if there are any special precautions that I need to take before checking the timing on the car. On some of my previious cars, I had to take a paper clip and short out two pins on the diagnostic adaptor box in order to get a proper reading. Is this also necessary on the 940? I'm also guessing that the timing is set by rotating the angel sensor on the rear of the camshaft. I'm not ready to change the timing yet, I just want to check it to make sure that the little tiny "click click click" i hear behind the dash board under the lightest of acceleration and the lightest of deceleration is not a mild preignition condition. Thanks for the wisdom!

Sincerely,

JB
