Car is a '92 965 w/ the AW 30/40 transmission and 190K miles. Symptom is that when the torque converter is locked, the revs creep up ~200-300rpm when the engine is under load (most noticeable when starting up a hill). The torque converter is definately locked b/c a stab of the accelerator pedal will unlock it...letting off the accelerator will lock it again (so the electronics are definitely telling it to lock). It almost feels like a manual with a clutch that is slipping slightly. Fluid was flushed with synthetic less than 10K miles ago (as I have done every 30K since new). This started on the way back from a ski trip to CO where the tranny was doing double-duty climbing all the hills on I-70.
I originally thought the fluid just got hot (despite the massive aux. cooler I installed a while back) and was allowing the clutch to slip. However, the fluid on the dipstick is like-new and isn't burned and it's still doing this a week later. I'm going to flush the tranny this weekend for the heck of it, but very seriously doubt this will change anything. There are no other abnormal symptoms...it shifts like it did 200K miles ago.
So, my question is, is my torque converter finally dead? Anyone know of a source for a replacement other than the dealer? Any other things it could be? I've got the green manual but it's not very helpful in this arena.
TIA,
Lance
