Volvo fuel gauge sending unit 700

Do I have bad luck, or do Volvos have fuel gauge sending unit issues. All three cars have the same problem after half a tank of fuel they read emty. My 1971 164, my 1979 242DL, and my 1986 740Ti all do this. The windings on the sending unit in the tank are not brocken. Is this common.
