oil idiot light ?malfunction 200

hi,

i have an 1983 240gl b23e. is my oil idiot light in the instrument cluster meant to light up with the car ignition set to ON? and should it flicker when the car is kicking over. at last check it is off when the ignition is set to ON. then flickers while car is turning over. the goes out when car is running.

i recently replaced the oil with 15W-40 castrol magnatec about 500k ago. this matched the specifications when the car was new. but since it is just over 20 years old perhaps i should have used a thicker oil. the car is not overheating or anything and there is plenty of oil.

please ease my concern.
