distributor rebuilding? 444-544

The last distributor that I replaced, RPR would not take the old one back. I was wondering if anyone has tried to rebuild them at home, or if it is worth the time/hassle/expense. It would be nice to have one ready to go on the shelf instead of having to take a car off the road for a week waiting for a new one.
This is the bosch 007 non vacuum advanced on my 544.
