Annoying little 'rattle' behind dash on '94 945Ti......am i the only one? 900

Geesh, I can't figure this out. The car is new to me. It has 88K miles and even on the test drive, it had a little, what i call a "rattle" or some little noise from what I think is behind the dash. The Previous Owner said it was pre-ignition, which i doubted then, and doubt now. I run premium fuel, all prior repair work shows that the PO complained to the "V-Shop" about this describing it as "pinging" but they could not find the problem as described. The "V-Shop" ran diagnostics and with whatever equipment they have, indicated in writting that the timing was fine.

The weird part of this is that it "rattles" only when lightly accelerating and in some instances when in decelerating lightly. I'm imagining something related to the throttle linkage now as it does seem to have some relation to acceleration and deceleration. I know it's difficult at best, to decipher noises by text description only, but i don't really know how to share the problem otherwise. It is getting on my last couple of good words, and as a previous poster stated, I'm prepaing to murmer some indelicate phrases if I can't find and fix the problem.

If anyone has had an annoying little noise that COULD be "pinging" but really does not sound metallic enough to be such, and has found something that provokes the driver by means of a little noise behind the dash, please do tell, and thanks for the help!

Sincerely,

JB
