My wife and I drove the brick to the video store last night. Every video rental place in town (all 3 of them) is doing any rental for 99 cents right now, so it's a good time to catch up on the new releases. Anyway, we got back in the car, I started it, and quickly realized that the cable wasn't attached to the gas pedal. Out came the flashlight, off came the cover under the dash, and the problem quickly presented itself. The spring clip had come off and disappeared, and the pin through the cable had fallen on the floor.
It shouldn't have been a big deal, just put the pin back in and use a paper clip as a temporary spring clip. Unfortunately, I dropped the pin somewhere in the dash, and it never came back. A quick search through the tool bag turned up an allen bolt and a couple of nuts, and we were back on the road. Tuesday I'm picking up 2 replacements at the P&P, and adding one to my emergency collection.
BTW, the only time I've ever had that happen before was while I was test-driving a VW Cabriolet from a lot in North Carolina. The ball end of the cable popped off at the top of the gas pedal, and I managed to put it back on without actually ever seeing it. The salesman was impressed and said he'd have had to call a wrecker to get it back to the lot. How do these people survive in the real world?
