gas guage wacky 700

Can someone help with this? My son's 89 740 has a gas guage that seems to warm up with the cars temp. That is...it reads empty until the car is driven to operating temp and then seems to work..although I do not know how accurate it is? Can anyone suggest a place to start? Thanks in advance.
