After a thorough check out of suspension bushings, and an overhaul of the steering rack, I still have a steering rattle over bumps which feels like it is very near the top of the steering column. Tie rod ends, ball joints, column universal joints etc have all been checked and seem OK. There is no discernable side play in the steering wheel, and the column anchorage bolts under the dash are tight.
I'm fairly certain that the rattle is from the steering column bearing at the top of the column (or possibly the one at the bottom) The fact I have an airbag fitted makes me reluctant to disassemble things in this area, and I may (reluctantly) have to go to the dealer to get the work done.
Anyone done the column bearing replacement job themselves, or had it done, and have an estimate of hours required and approx cost of parts (bearings) ?
I'm determined to eliminate this rattle - my wife thinks I'm a bit of a nut to worry about it, but it really bugs me.
