Lambda-sond Control Unit Ground 200 1981

1981 non-Turbo: I have the ECU and the control unit for the lambda-sond system detached from their positions behind the passenger kick panel and resting on the floor of the car. I'm trying to pinpoint a rainwater leak up in that area under the dash. The Lambda-sond control unit is metal. Can I run the car with the box on the floor and not grounded to the side of the car, or does it rely on the mounting screw to ground the system? I want to drive it in the rain for a few days with everything out of the way so I can see up in there really well and hopefully figure out where the leak is, but I don't want to screw up some sensitive and expensive electronics. Any help would be appreciated.
