Trunk/boot seal channel drain hole? 1800

In replacing the trunk seal in my "new" 1969 1800S I noticed two half moon openings in the body channel/gutter at the rear, one on each side(previously covered by the seal and goop). These lead into the trunk but have no drain hose. I had been getting water in the trunk with rain, thus the seal replacement. Why are the holes there and what am I missing?
