Searching Vin numbers 200 1980

I am currently in the process of restoring a 1980 242GT and i am trying to make sure that i do not have a stolen car in my possetion. All i know about the car is that for 3 yrs it sat at a cement plant and before that it came from a person who purchased it at an auction, and it has not been registered for over 7yrs. The only other date related to the car is that it had a radiator flush in 83. I had a province police check done and there were no results. Also every vin number finder website i go to says that for the search to work the car must be a 1981 or newer and have a 17 character vin number. As far as i can tell mine only has 15 characters. Does anyone know of any vin searches that will search 15 digit vins? I have heard from a few people that because my car is that old that there are most likely no records of it, and that it wont show up as stolen when i go to register it. Is this true? (It is a Canadian car). Any help would be much appreciated, thanks
