Rusted transmission crossmember 200 1991

I went under my car to investigate a suspect U-joint, only to find the transmission cross member rusted through. The bone yard wants $50 (if I can find one), apparently, up here in the NorthEast this is a common failure. The Dealer wants $120. Has anyone done a V-8 conversion or a automatic to manual conversion and have a left-over crossmember? And the U-joint was bad as well. Any good leads on on-line bone yards would be useful.
One of the engineers at work suggested just bracing the exsisting crossmember with a piece of steel channel stock. Any thoughts?
